YouTube deprioritizes custom thumbnails for Shorts, breakout as an influencer faster by picking a niche

Welcome to TIL - Creator Edition! Each week, I discuss things that matter the most to you as a YouTuber, Podcaster, or content creator.

YouTube delays thumbnails for Shorts, but bumps up AI voiceovers

YouTube's latest announcement has left Shorts creators scratching their heads. No custom thumbnails for Shorts until 2025? It's as if YouTube is deliberately trying to hobble its own platform while TikTok races ahead.

The excuse? "Most views come from the feed." Sure, and most views on TikTok used to come from the For You page. But TikTok evolved, and now secondary screens are bustling with activity. Meanwhile, YouTube seems stuck in a time warp, desperately juggling horizontal videos, Shorts, community posts, and even games. It's an identity crisis that's leaving creators in the lurch.

Navigating a YouTube channel feels like solving a puzzle, with precise taps required instead of TikTok's intuitive swipe. It's almost as if YouTube doesn't want you to find creators' content. But hey, at least we're getting text-to-speech for Shorts! Because nothing says "engaging content" like monotonous robot voices, right?

YouTube's scattered approach is leaving creators in the dust. While they fumble with basic features, other platforms are innovating. It's time for YouTube to pick a lane and commit or risk losing the very creators who make their platform worth watching.

How soon can you succeed on YouTube now? The answer is in your content.

The golden age of YouTube stardom is over. Two YouTube executives recently shared insights that paint a picture of a platform where success is being redefined in fascinating ways.

Breakout success on YouTube is taking on a new form, with creators finding their stride by pursuing niche audiences. While mainstream breakouts may be decreasing due to content oversaturation, this shift is creating a more diverse and vibrant creator ecosystem. The challenge? Finding your perfect audience match requires a bit of luck and a lot of strategy.

  1. Creators are building dedicated, engaged communities.

  2. Niche content is becoming the new norm for creator success.

  3. Platforms are evolving to support diverse content types.

The trade-off is that even popular niche creators may not achieve universal recognition. However, this presents an opportunity for creators to diversify their content across multiple channels or platforms. Take MrBeast, for example, who successfully manages half a dozen channels with original content, albeit with a large production team.

The good news is that breakout success is still very much possible. The key lies in finding that sweet spot where your passion, skills, and audience intersect. It may require more work and creativity, but the rewards - a dedicated fanbase and the potential for sustainable growth - are well worth the effort. So, creators, embrace the niche revolution and let your unique voice shine!

Creator Spotlight: MrBeast

A thumbnail is a creator's first and often last chance to capture an audience in a world where attention spans are shorter than ever. And When MrBeast first stepped into YouTube, his thumbnails were as ordinary as they come - simple snapshots of gameplay. Little did he know that these preview images would soon become his secret to standout in the crowded feed.

MrBeast’s journey to master the thumbnail creation was filled with experimentation. From basic text overlays that offered little impact to bold color palettes that were almost overwhelming, he tried it all.

MrBeast’s first breakthrough came when he added his own personality to the thumbnails. Selfies, action shots, and even exaggerated expressions began to draw viewers in. He realized that his presence in the thumbnails made the content more relatable and engaging, significantly boosting viewer connection.

But MrBeast wanted to push his creative boundaries further. His next step was to transform his thumbnails into visual narratives. Using color, composition, and emotion, he started to paint a picture of what viewers could expect in the video. This approach paid off big time as his views and subscribers soared.

MrBeast’s Most Popular Videos

When comparing the performance of MrBeast's various thumbnail styles, certain types clearly stand out. Hyper-realistic composites featuring animated-style images of MrBeast in extreme scenarios average around 300 million views. High-fidelity portraits, which focus on close-ups of MrBeast with expressive faces and luxurious background items, attracted about 150 million views. Reaction-centric thumbnails, emphasizing emotional expressions and small text, typically gather around 30 million views. In contrast, simpler designs like static gameplay capture usually reach only about 500k views. These numbers highlight the crucial role of strong visual storytelling and emotional engagement in attracting viewers.

Today, MrBeast's thumbnails are nothing short of iconic. They are meticulously crafted works of art that blend high-quality images with psychological triggers. His ability to anticipate viewer desires and deliver visually stunning thumbnails has solidified his position as the biggest YouTuber in the world.
